Mumbai Indians Women’s team batter Yastika Bhatia has compared Sajeevan Sajana to the Kieron Pollard of their squad after Sajana’s outstanding performance in the WPL 2024 opener against the Delhi Capitals.
In a thrilling opening match of the Women’s Premier League’s second edition, debutant Sajeevan Sajana emerged as the hero for Mumbai Indians. Needing five runs off the last ball, Sajana smashed Alice Capsey for a six, securing a dramatic four-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals.
Despite a brilliant knock of 55 runs off 34 deliveries from MI skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, the team found itself in a precarious situation in the final moments. Kaur fell on the penultimate delivery, leaving Sajana to face the pressure in her debut match. With composure and skill, the 29-year-old danced down the track and confidently hit the ball over long-on, clinching the win.
Yastika Bhatia, MI’s wicket-keeper-batter, expressed her admiration for the debutant, likening Sajana to the team’s powerhouse and comparing her to former Mumbai Indians finisher and West Indies batter Kieron Pollard. This thrilling victory showcased Mumbai Indians’ resilience and the emergence of a new star in Sajeevan Sajana.
“If you have watched Harry di (Harmanpreet Kaur) speak in interviews before, she mentioned that Sajana is a player to watch out for in this WPL. MI have faith in her and she is like Kieron Pollard of the women’s team. She has got that role, and she did really well, credit goes to her,” Yastika said in the post-match press conference as quoted by India Today.
Yastika played a pivotal role in Mumbai’s victory against Delhi at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. She laid the foundation by scoring 57 runs off 45 balls as the opener. Despite losing her partner Hayley Matthews early on, the 23-year-old capitalized on the powerplay, maintaining her confidence and keeping the momentum going.
