The former Indian cricketer and 2011 World Cup Hero Yuvraj Singh has released a bold statement on the captaincy of Rohit Sharma ahead of the 2023 World Cup.
As the ODI World Cup 2023 draws near, the Indian cricket team and its management find themselves under the critical scrutiny of various quarters. All attention is set to focus on Rohit Sharma, the captain across all formats, who is poised to lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023.
It’s worth noting that India’s last triumph in an ICC tournament dates back 13 years to the 2013 Champions Trophy, captained by MS Dhoni. As the sense of frustration among fans continues to mount due to India’s ICC trophy drought, it’s undeniable that the 2023 ODI World Cup will serve as a pivotal test for Rohit Sharma’s captaincy stint. This comes in the wake of India’s disappointing defeats in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final and the 2023 World Test Championship final, both under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.
In the midst of this context, former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has thrown his support behind Indian captain Rohit Sharma. In a recent interview, Yuvraj Singh characterized Rohit Sharma as a capable captain. However, he underlined the critical role that a quality team plays in securing triumphs in ICC tournaments. Yuvraj also highlighted how MS Dhoni’s success as a captain was significantly aided by a robust team comprising seasoned players.
Yuvraj Singh during his interview said:
“I think Rohit has become a very good leader because he has led the Mumbai Indians in the IPL for such a long time. And he is a very sensible guy under pressure. You need to give a good team to a sensible captain who is experienced as well. MS Dhoni was a good captain but he also got a good team right?”
He further added: “It has to be a team effort. People have put their hands up under pressure.”
