Rain and strong winds disrupted the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match between Australia and Sri Lanka in Lucknow on Monday, October 16.
After Sri Lanka’s captain, Kusal Mendis won the toss and chose to bat first, their team faced a challenging situation, being bowled out for 209 despite an initially promising start. Towards the end of their innings, a strong wind swept through the Ekana Stadium, causing some advertising hoardings to tumble into the crowd. Thankfully, no spectators were injured, and the stadium’s diligent staff acted swiftly to prevent any accidents.
The fans were promptly relocated, and the ground crew worked efficiently to prepare the field for the second innings. The gusty winds also caused a bit of a mess with the World Cup branding, tangling and tearing some of it. However, the dedicated ground staff swiftly cleaned up the affected areas.
The safety and comfort of the fans remained a priority throughout, and the efforts of the stadium’s team ensured a smooth transition to the next phase of the game.
Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka had a bright start with their openers Pathum Nissanka, who hit 61 off 67 balls, and Kusal Perera, who made 78 off 82 balls. They put up a remarkable 125-run partnership for the first wicket, doing so in 130 balls. Australian skipper Pat Cummins played a crucial part in obtaining his team their first breakthrough when he removed Nissanka with a well-executed short ball during the 22nd over.
A tad later, Perera too lost his wicket to Cummins, after his stumps were dislodged. Following these critical dismissals, Sri Lanka’s fortunes took a plunge, and Adam Zampa emerged to the fore. Zampa, an incredible wrist-spinner, created a web of spin expertise, capturing the wickets of Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Chamika Karunaratne, and Maheesh Theekshana, ending with outstanding figures of 4/47 in eight overs.
Thanks to a brilliant spell, Sri Lanka saw a dramatic turn of events, going from a strong position at 157/1 to being all out for 209 in just 43.3 overs. In a thrilling match, Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis played pivotal roles in guiding Australia to their first victory in the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023. The game concluded with Australia defeating Sri Lanka by 5 wickets, highlighted by Marcus Stoinis’ emphatic winning six.
