After an exhilarating end to their five-match ODI series against Australia, South Africa’s skipper, Temba Bavuma, shared his contentment with the momentum his squad has built as they prepare for the 2023 ODI World Cup.
In a thrilling series versus the Australians, the Proteas clinched a sensational triumph, finally winning the battle 3-2. Their title was clinched with a thumping 122-run win in the final match, a contest that featured the talent of South African all-rounder Marco Jansen.
Jansen’s powerful batting outburst played a significant role in South Africa’s comeback after a difficult start. He scorched his way to a quickfire 47 runs from just 23 balls, setting a difficult goal of 316 runs for Australia. But Jansen’s impact didn’t end there; he proved to be equally lethal with the ball, claiming an impressive five wickets for a modest 39 runs in his eight overs.
25-year-old Marco Jansen acknowledged the strong strain applied by the Australian team during the series. He underlined that character was equally as crucial as talent in conquering such problems. Jansen complimented his team’s unshakable perseverance, particularly when they found themselves in difficult situations. He also stressed the critical momentum they’ve established as they prepare for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023.
“Australia really put us under pressure. We had conversation around character with the ball. We didn’t have a look at our skills but it was about looking at the overall personality of the team. Even if we have our backs on the wall, we have the team to bounce back. We’ve created a nice momentum with World Cup in a couple weeks,” Temba Bavuma said.
Additionally, the captain of the Proteas underscored the significant boost in confidence that his team acquired during this closely contested series. This was especially true for their bowlers, who were frequently thrust into tense situations. He went on to mention a conversation he had with South African batsman Aiden Markram, underlining the points he wanted to convey.
“I was having a conversation with Aiden, in the first game we had an opportunity to win the game but we didn’t. The confidence that we have gained from this series is something which we can’t lose. I was talking to the bowlers and they said it was the best kind of preparation that we can have, bowling in pressure situations,” Bavuma further added.
