Sunil Gavaskar was quite straightforward in his criticism of Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill for what he saw as their hasty dismissals during a crucial ICC World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh.
Sunil Gavaskar didn’t hold back his assessment as he called out Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill for what felt like hurried dismissals during a key match in the ICC World Cup 2023. In sharp contrast, he lauded Virat Kohli for his never-ending drive. Kohli’s magnificent undefeated century later guided India to their fourth successive win in the competition, effectively silencing the skeptics.
Taking the crease, Iyer stepped in for the well-set Shubman Gill, who had just put up his half-century. Gill’s brave attempt to clear long-on resulted in a letdown as Mahmudullah held onto a key catch at the boundary. On the other hand, Iyer, who had been steadily accumulating singles and doubles with Kohli, strayed from his methodical strategy by trying a big shot, which led to a similar ending, with Mahmudullah once again proving to be his nemesis in the deep.
Gavaskar said, “He (Shreyas Iyer) lost his patience. He was batting on 19, and threw his wicket away. Shubman Gill (was batting on) fifty (52), threw his wicket away. You need to know how to get to a hundred. Shubman Gill is at least getting hundreds, Shreyas Iyer is not getting hundreds. He is getting his opportunities to bat at number 4 on pitches as good as these and attacks as toothless as this and he is throwing away the opportunity,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Gavaskar didn’t hold back in lauding Virat Kohli, commending his steadfast commitment to the game, notably his exceptional ability to keep his wicket, making it a tough challenge for opponents to get him out. Despite the growing criticism that Kohli’s quest for individual achievements might sometimes overshadow the team’s objectives, the ‘Little Master’ passionately expressed his endorsement, arguing that the 34-year-old’s approach is rooted in a strong desire for victory, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with his pursuit of scoring centuries.
“Kohli never does that. Kohli will seldom ever throw his wicket away. He makes you earn his wicket. And that is exactly what you need. When he got to 70-80, realising that he has an opportunity to get to a hundred and why not? Hundreds don’t come everyday,” he further added.
Virat Kohli’s extraordinary feat of being just one ODI century away from matching Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 centuries underscores his enduring greatness in the world of cricket. His unwavering consistency and composure in high-pressure situations have solidified his status as a cricketing icon, serving as a wellspring of inspiration for up-and-coming cricketers around the globe. India’s recent triumph against Bangladesh extends their flawless World Cup run, boasting an unblemished record of four victories in as many matches. Their upcoming clash against New Zealand, scheduled for this Sunday, holds immense anticipation.
