In the dynamic world of Indian cricket, the shift in leadership has consistently sparked lively discussions and fueled speculation. A significant moment in this ongoing narrative occurred when Virat Kohli stepped down as the captain of the Indian cricket team, creating a void that was swiftly occupied by the energetic Rohit Sharma.
Around two years ago, there was a significant shake-up in Indian cricket, coinciding with a certain time of the month. In a surprising move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to relieve Virat Kohli of his duties as the ODI captain in December 2021. Stepping into his shoes was Rohit Sharma, who, despite initial reluctance, has proven to be a commendable leader. Currently, under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, the Indian team has been on a winning spree, securing victories in all 8 league games of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
Rohit Sharma has not only earned accolades for his stellar performance but also for the team’s dominating run in the tournament. As one of the top 5 leading run-scorers, he has been leading by example. Interestingly, former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has disclosed that Rohit Sharma was initially hesitant about taking on the leadership role and had to be persuaded to step in for Virat Kohli.
This turn of events adds an intriguing layer to Rohit Sharma’s captaincy journey, shedding light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics that shaped the current leadership scenario in Indian cricket.

During a recent conversation with the media, the former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly shared that Rohit Sharma expressed hesitance due to the extensive international cricket commitments and the significant responsibilities he carries as the leader of the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
While talking to Sports Tak Ganguly said, “Rohit wasn’t keen. It had gone to a stage ki aapko han bolna hai nahin to main announce kar dunga. (You have to say yes and accept it or else I will announce your name as captain).”
Ganguly praised Rohit Sharma and said, “We knew because he was an outstanding captain. After Virat Kohli left he was the best man to lead India. I am not surprised by what I am seeing right now.” Team India have won big against every opposition they have faced in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly also thanked Rohit Sharma for taking up the responsibility when needed and added, “So I am happy that he has taken it and is doing so well right now.”
India is gearing up for a crucial showdown against the Netherlands in the last league match of the CWC 2023 at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Following that, the team will shift to Mumbai for what seems like a semifinal clash with New Zealand. Meanwhile, Pakistan and Afghanistan face a challenging task to secure their spot in the tournament.
