Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, has offered his perspective regarding India’s quest for a wicketkeeper-batsman for the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup 2023. He suggested that Ishan Kishan should be selected as the wicket-keeper for the ODI World Cup 2023.
Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, shared his thoughts on the search for a wicketkeeper-batter for the upcoming Asia Cup and ODI World Cup, which will be hosted by Pakistan with Sri Lanka and India respectively. The absence of Rishabh Pant due to a previous car crash injury has turned the selection process into a crucial aspect for Indian cricket.
Ganguly, a highly respected figure in Indian cricket, voiced his preference for Ishan Kishan as the choice for wicketkeeper-batter. He highlighted Ishan Kishan’s explosive batting style as a major factor influencing his decision.
“Pant is the best wicketkeeper in the country, but you can see Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul (depending on his fitness); these two will be right up in Rohit’s and Rahul’s minds. I like Ishan Kishan because he just opens up the game for any team. I am sure Dravid will keep him in his plans,” Ganguly said during a recent event.
Ganguly emphasized the wealth of options available for head coach Rahul Dravid and selectors to choose from, affirming that the focus should be on identifying the best playing XI. “It has to be a team of experience and people who don’t have any scars — like Jaiswal, Varma, Ishan Kishan. They can go and play fearless cricket. Rahul (Dravid), Rohit, and the selectors have plenty of choices; they just have to identify and pick the best XI,” Ganguly further said.
Ishan Kishan has built a commendable track record, accumulating 694 runs at an impressive average of 46.26 across 17 ODIs. Noteworthy is his exceptional achievement of a double century and six half-centuries.
This decision holds significant weight, especially considering India’s aspiration to secure victory on their home turf in these prestigious tournaments.
The upcoming marquee events, namely the Asia Cup and the 2023 World Cup, are scheduled to kick off on August 30 and October 5, respectively.
