In his assessment of the ODI World Cup captaincy, former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond has supported Netherlands’ leader, Scott Edwards, above Babar Azam of Pakistan as the World Cup Captain.
Former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond has chosen Netherlands’ captain, Scott Edwards, over Babar Azam of Pakistan as the ideal captain for the ODI World Cup. Babar Azam’s captaincy is under scrutiny due to Pakistan’s three consecutive losses in the tournament.
Pakistan had a promising start, securing victories in their first two matches against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka. However, their winning streak was halted by Rohit Sharma’s Indian team, and they subsequently faced defeats against India, Australia, and Afghanistan.
In a crucial game on October 27 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Pakistan will face South Africa, and a loss in this match would severely diminish their chances of making it to the semifinals. In a session with ESPNcricinfo where he had to choose between the two, Shane Bond favored Scott Edwards over Babar Azam.
Meanwhile, Shane Bond has just wrapped up his extensive stint with the Mumbai Indians franchise and is now all set to embark on a new journey with the Rajasthan Royals for the upcoming IPL season. In this exciting move, he will take on a dual role within the team, serving as both an assistant coach and the fast bowling coach.

PCB to dismiss Babar Azam as Captain after World Cup 2023
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has provided clarification regarding Babar Azam’s captaincy in light of the team’s recent underwhelming performances. The board has confirmed that both Babar and Chief Selector Inzamam-ul-Haq have been given the authority to select the squad for the ongoing tournament. Furthermore, the PCB has appealed to all stakeholders to rally behind the team and help them stage a triumphant return in this prestigious event.
“Addressing the media scrutiny directed at captain Babar Azam and the team management, the board’s stance, echoing that of former cricketers, is that successes and defeats are part of the game. Captain Babar Azam and Chief Selector Inzamam-ul-Haq were given freedom and support in forming the squad for the ICC World Cup 2023.
“Looking ahead, the board will make decisions in the best interest of Pakistan cricket based on the team’s performances in the World Cup. At present, the PCB encourages fans, former players and stakeholders to rally behind the team as they strive to make a triumphant comeback in the mega-event,” said PCB in a statement.
