Umar Gul, the former Pakistani fast bowler, has raised doubts about Shadab Khan’s injury during the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup in India, suggesting that it might not be as genuine as it appears.
Former Pakistani cricketer Umar Gul has expressed skepticism about the legitimacy of Shadab Khan’s injury during the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Shadab Khan, the versatile all-rounder, suffered a head injury while attempting to run out Quinton de Kock in the match against South Africa in Chennai on October 27. After receiving medical attention from the physiotherapist, Shadab took a precautionary exit from the field due to concerns about a possible concussion. However, upon witnessing Shadab’s injury, Umar Gul had his reservations.
In the course of the Proteas’ innings, Shadab experienced a concussion while fielding, which resulted in Usama Mir taking on the role of the first-ever concussion substitute in the history of the Cricket World Cup. Despite this setback, Pakistan’s campaign took a turn for the worse as they suffered their fourth consecutive defeat.

Gul couldn’t help but express his astonishment regarding the seriousness of Shadab’s injury, as he pointed out that the all-rounder was observed enthusiastically cheering and clapping for the team from the dugout during the later stages of the game.
“We dont know what kind of injury he had, but several questions are raised. Questions are raised when you fall, make an excuse of a concussion, walk out, physio checks you, and after a while you talk to people on the sidelines, then go inside again,” Umar Gul said on a Pakistan news channel.
Former Test pacer Sohail Tanvir echoed Umar Gul’s sentiments.
“We’re uncertain about the severity of this concussion injury, but the manner in which Shadab initially returned to the field and then withdrew, following someone’s advice. His presence in the dugout does raise questions about whether he should have continued playing,” he said.
