In a press conference held on Tuesday, India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, and the Chief Selector of the BCCI, Ajit Agarkar, unveiled the 15-member squad that will represent India in the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently gave a heads-up to all 10 participating teams, asking them to complete their squad selections and submit them to the governing body by September 5. Following this directive, the Indian captain Rohit Sharma with Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar has revealed the 15 individuals who have successfully secured their spots in the Indian squad for the upcoming prestigious tournament.
India has finalized its ODI World Cup squad with a composition of seven batsmen, four bowlers, and four all-rounders. Notably, India has shown confidence in KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who have recently recovered from injuries, securing their spots. Meanwhile, Sanju Samson, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Tilak Varma unfortunately missed out on selection. India’s bowling arsenal includes three left-arm spinners, complemented by the inclusion of three specialist pacers in the squad.
Rohit Sharma will continue leading the setup whereas has Hardik Pandya been named his deputy for the marquee ICC event. Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul are the available choices for wicketkeeping duties.
Notably, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, who was named as the traveling reserve in the Asia Cup squad, failed to make the cut in the 15-member squad for the World Cup.
One noticeable absence is Yuzvendra Chahal, who was not included in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup. It’s worth noting that Chahal also did not secure a spot in the World Cup squad. On the other hand, Suryakumar Yadav, despite facing challenges in the 50-over format, has managed to hold onto his place in the squad.
Speaking about India’s squad for World Cup 2023, Rohit Sharma said:
“There are players who are going to miss but that happens every World Cup. There are no surprises over there. The talent we have in India, it is hard…I have gone through it, I know how it feels. You have to keep your chin up…it was about how to create a good balance, keep good all-round options, this is the best 15 we could get.”
“If you have quality players in the team, challenges (to select an XI) go up, we have to know our opponents, who are the players we have in form.”
“Our endeavour will be to do the best for the team on a given day.”
The journey to the World Cup title for the Indian team will begin on October 8th, when they lock horns with the five-time champions, Australia, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Moreover, the thrilling showdown between India and Pakistan is expected to unravel on October 14th, now in the redesigned schedule approved by the ICC, and it will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
