During a press conference in Bengaluru last Saturday, Rahul Dravid, India’s head coach, spoke highly of the outstanding leadership demonstrated by Captain Rohit Sharma in the ongoing World Cup.
Dravid highlighted that Rohit, besides captaining the team, has displayed remarkable fearlessness as he takes charge at the forefront of the batting lineup.
Before India’s last league match versus the Netherlands, Dravid commended Rohit for his bold and proactive style. Dravid shed light on Rohit’s remarkable journey, from being absent in the 2011 World Cup to captaining the team in 2023. He also emphasized how Rohit, as captain, has given the team the liberty to showcase their skills, leading to an impressive string of eight consecutive victories.
“He’s been a great captain for a while. The team and coaches respect him a lot. It’s nice to watch him work. I believe he truly deserves all the success he’s getting, and hopefully, it keeps going,” Dravid said.
Rohit Sharma’s dynamic approach at the top of the order has played a crucial role in giving India explosive beginnings. His aggressive batting style not only heaps pressure on the opposition’s new-ball bowlers but also sets the stage for successful run chases. Demonstrating a selfless attitude, Rohit has amassed 442 runs at a strike rate exceeding 100, fearlessly taking on the primary bowlers and establishing the foundation for triumphant pursuits.
“Rohit is definitely a great leader, no doubt. He leads by example both on and off the field. The starts he gives us and how he opens up games are impressive. Many times, there were games that could have been tricky, but he helped us crack them open with his strong starts,” Dravid said.
“In the end, it seemed easy, but looking back, as a coaching staff, when we reviewed it, we understood how crucial his innings in such games were. It has certainly made it easier for the guys who came after. He’s been fantastic with his batting and leadership, taking on the game and leading from the front. We talk about playing the game in a certain way. You can’t do that unless your leader truly believes in it and sets an example,” he concluded.
