The Pakistan Cricket Team’s journey in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 has been quite disappointing thus far. Although they kicked off the tournament with victories against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka in Hyderabad, they encountered a rough patch with three consecutive losses. Their misfortune began in Ahmedabad, where they faced a defeat against India, followed by another setback in Bangalore against Australia. However, the most significant blow came when they played against Afghanistan in Chennai. These successive losses have undoubtedly raised concerns within the Pakistan Cricket Board.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has recently issued a statement addressing their team’s showing in the 2023 World Cup and indicated the possibility of a significant shift within their squad. Concerns have been voiced by Pakistani supporters and former cricket players about Babar Azam’s captaincy, with some recommending a change in leadership.PCB in a released statement has said, “Looking ahead, the board will make decisions in the best interest of Pakistan cricket based on the team’s performances in the World Cup.”
The PCB has emphasized that during the tournament, Pakistan captain Babar Azam and chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq were entrusted with full autonomy and creative control. They have also passionately called upon the fans to continue showing their support for the team, rallying behind their players, especially with four vital matches left in the tournament. Following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, there has been a significant wave of discontent directed towards captain Babar Azam.
A number of former Pakistani cricketers have urged Babar Azam to step down from his captaincy role. Previously, a few media reports suggested that Babar Azam was considering stepping down as captain, leading the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to explore new options for the leadership of the national team. Mohammad Rizwan, Shadab Khan, and Shaheen Afridi are among the potential choices that the PCB might consider. Shahid Afridi, the former Pakistani all-rounder, criticized Babar’s performance in the tournament and advised him to become more actively involved during matches.
