England’s journey in the 2023 ODI World Cup hasn’t been one to remember, managing only two victories and facing defeat in six out of eight matches. Jos Buttler, the current captain of England’s white-ball cricket, has expressed his desire to continue leading the team beyond the ongoing World Cup.
Following Eoin Morgan’s retirement, Jos Buttler took the reins as England’s white-ball cricket captain. Despite leading the team to a triumphant T20 World Cup victory last year, their performance in the ongoing ODI World Cup has been disappointing. With just two wins and six losses, England was ousted from the tournament long ago. However, they broke a five-match losing streak by defeating the Netherlands by 160 runs on November 8, climbing from the bottom to the seventh spot on the points table with one game remaining.
After this crucial victory, Buttler, who has struggled with a meager average of 13.88 and scored 111 runs in eight games, voiced his frustration with his own form. Despite this, he expressed his desire to continue leading the English team in white-ball cricket.
Looking ahead, England has a tour to the Caribbean after the World Cup. Rob Key, England’s managing director of men’s cricket, rejoined the team in Kolkata, where they will face Pakistan in their last World Cup game on Saturday, November 11. Key is set to hold discussions with Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott to determine the lineup for the upcoming series against the West Indies.
“I’d like to [lead in the Caribbean]. I know Rob Key arrives in India today. We can have some good conversations with him and the coach and everyone, and make a plan for that tour. But yeah, I’d like to. You want to lead from the front and do that in your own performance,” he said. “I’ll stick to the stuff that’s served me well over a long period of time when I’ve had these little runs of form and hopefully I’ll come out the other side of it very soon,” Buttler was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

The 2025 Champions Trophy will see the top eight teams from the league phase on the points table qualifying, and Pakistan secures a spot as hosts. Following a convincing victory against the Netherlands, England is in an excellent position to participate. Buttler complimented his players for staying together during trying circumstances, adding that their key goal now is to secure a position in the Champions Trophy.
“If you watched training yesterday, the guys probably trained as hard as they have trained all trip, which shows the level of commitment and desire to put things right. It would be easy for us to tail off… credit to everyone for still putting [effort] in and showing how much it means to play for England and the pride in our performance. Of course, the Champions Trophy is something we’re very focused on and determined to make sure we’re there,” Buttler added.
