The ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 holds significant importance for participating teams, as the top seven teams from the league stage will secure their place in the Champions Trophy 2025, alongside the host nation, Pakistan. This decision was officially sanctioned by the ICC in 2021.
According to an ICC spokesperson in conversation with ESPNcricinfo, the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, approved by the ICC Board in 2021, is part of a lineup of eight major men’s cricket tournaments scheduled to take place from 2024 to 2031.
In November 2021, the ICC introduced a lineup of international tournaments for both men and women set to take place in the 2023-24 period, with plans for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 and 2029 also on the horizon.
One of the international men’s tournaments scheduled for the 2024-2031 period has raised eyebrows with its unexpected qualification process. In this cycle, we’re in for not one, but two Champions Trophy editions, with the next one slated for 2029.
In the press release, ICC said the Champions Trophy would be an eight-team event, and the tournament structure “will follow previous editions with two groups of four: semi-finals and finals.”
The qualification criteria also imply that West Indies, Zimbabwe, and Ireland won’t have a chance to participate in the current 2023 World Cup, as they haven’t qualified for it. Just a few weeks ago, Shakib Al Hasan shared his eagerness to take part in the Champions Trophy 2025. “The 2025 Champions Trophy for ODIs and the 2024 T20 World Cup for T20Is Tests may be sooner. Maybe (after the World Cup). I will retire all at once, but I will stop playing each format one by one. I will announce my retirement after the 2025 Champions Trophy.” Shakib had stated.
In 2013 and 2017, the Champions Trophy featured the top eight teams in the ODI rankings. For the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy, it was decided that only the top seven teams in the rankings would qualify. The ICC’s chief executives committee initially approved this decision, which was later passed by the ICC Board.
