Australia’s Glenn Maxwell won’t be able to play in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match against England in Ahmedabad due to a concussion he sustained during a golf-related incident on Monday.
Following their triumph against New Zealand in Dharamshala, the entire Australian squad was granted a generous two-day break. During this downtime, players were free to utilize their time as they saw fit.
Maxwell, who has been a consistent performer, featured in all six matches, amassing a total of 196 runs with a remarkable top score of 106. His incredible feat of achieving the fastest century in World Cup history, achieved in just 40 balls against the Netherlands in Delhi, garnered much attention. Additionally, Maxwell displayed his versatility by taking 4 wickets with his off-spin.
However, it’s unfortunate that Glenn Maxwell has encountered his second unexpected injury in less than a year, this time a concussion. The cause of this injury was rather unusual—a mishap involving a golf cart while he was returning from the clubhouse to the team bus during one of his customary days off. It’s worth noting that the travel distance was relatively short, and there weren’t enough carts to accommodate everyone. As a result of this incident, Maxwell will be undergoing concussion treatments for a period of six to eight days, which regrettably rules him out of the upcoming match against England in Ahmedabad.

Glenn Maxwell faced a serious leg injury last year during a mishap at a friend’s 50th birthday celebration, which sidelined him for nearly five months. Nonetheless, there’s positive news from Australia’s coach, Andrew McDonald, who has shared that the versatile player is recovering nicely and will commence light training in the coming days.
“He’s been honest with the information he’s provided. He’s doing fine, he’ll start some light exercises today and we feel as though it will be a reasonably straightforward return to play protocol. Suppose the fortunate part was there was no other injury sustained which could have been a lot worse that it currently is,” McDonald was quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
“Think it rattled everyone to be fair once it came to the conclusion there was a concussion and he was going to miss a game. There was nothing untoward in the behavior throughout the day, it was a clear-cut accident and unfortunately, it’s compromised what we are doing as a team,” he added.
Due to the recent setback, Australia will have to find a replacement for one of their crucial middle-order players in the upcoming match against England. It’s probable that either Marcus Stoinis or Cameron Green will step in, while Marnus Labuschagne is expected to retain his spot in the starting lineup.
