Bangladesh’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan, won’t be able to participate in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 due to an injury sustained during their recent match against Sri Lanka in Delhi on November 6, 2023. Despite his absence, Bangladesh secured a victory in that match, ensuring they remain in contention for qualification in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
During the match against Sri Lanka, Shakib Al Hasan faced a painful blow to his index finger while he was at the crease. Despite the discomfort, he decided to soldier on, resorting to painkillers. This determination was driven by Bangladesh’s pursuit of a challenging 280-run target in Delhi.
Shakib’s resolve paid off as he went on to score an impressive 82 runs in just 65 deliveries, including 12 boundaries and 2 sixes. Alongside Najmul Hossain Shanto, who contributed a solid 90 runs with 12 fours, they guided Bangladesh to a remarkable 3-wicket victory with nearly 9 overs to spare. This victory propelled Bangladesh to the 7th position on the points table, securing 4 valuable points in the process.
Shakib picked up the injury while he was at the crease, and the National Team Physio, Bayjedul Islam Khan, provided more information about the incident. He verified that Shakib has a fractured finger, which means he won’t be able to participate in Bangladesh’s final tournament match against Australia in Pune on November 11.

“Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers. He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint. Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab,” Bangladesh team physio was quoted by ICC.
The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023’s Event Technical Committee has given the green light for Anamul Haque Bijoy to step in for Shakib Al Hasan in the Bangladesh squad. This decision comes after Shakib suffered a fracture to his left index finger during Bangladesh’s recent match against Sri Lanka on November 6th. Anamul Haque, with 45 ODIs under his belt, has been named as the replacement.
