Having already savored victory on the grandest of cricketing platforms, Adam Zampa, the talented Australian spinner, aspires to achieve the ultimate double. He’s set his sights on aiding his team in raising the coveted ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup trophy in India later this year, following their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2021.
Australia has an impressive history in ODI World Cups, having clinched victory five times, with their most recent win dating back to 2015. As they gear up for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, they are undoubtedly among the top contenders. The Australian squad, led by Pat Cummins and his teammates, already secured the World Test Championship earlier this year, adding to their already illustrious collection of trophies.
In preparation for the upcoming ODI World Cup, Adam Zampa’s experience in Indian conditions will be invaluable. The leg-spinner fondly recalls Australia’s triumph in the 2021 T20 World Cup and is eager to savor the joy of lifting the 50-over World Cup as well. Zampa’s performances were essential in securing Australia’s inaugural T20 World Cup victory in Dubai back in 2021. As the ODI World Cup 2023 approaches, his relevance will expand even further, as he becomes a vital figure in Australia’s pursuit of a sixth 50-over World Cup victory on the sub-continent.
It’s worth mentioning that Australia’s journey in the 2019 World Cup was halted by England in the semifinals, and Zampa is determined to see his team go the distance in the upcoming edition of this prestigious tournament.
“Winning that T20 World Cup was one of the best feelings I have had on the cricket field and winning the 50-over World Cup would be a pretty similar feeling I would assume,” Zampa said during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Trophy Tour.
“We are still thinking about that World Cup we won a couple of years ago (2021) and are trying to recreate that feeling. We were disappointed with our 2019 World Cup and how that finished and we still have that burning desire to win a one-day World Cup,” Zampa further added.
Australia is currently involved in a white-ball series in South Africa and is scheduled to go on a tour to India by the end of this month for the three-match ODI series, shortly before the World Cup.
As they gear up for the World Cup, Australia has chosen to boost their bowling options with a powerful trio of spinners. Ashton Agar and Tanveer Sangha have been picked in the preliminary 18-player team, complementing Zampa to produce a formidable spin attack for the competition.
Zampa further pointed out that Australia has been performing admirably in the realm of ODI cricket for a significant duration. Presently, they hold the second position in the ICC team rankings for ODIs.
“Our one-day cricket has been really good for a long time and we are one of the best teams in the world according to the ICC rankings. We have been playing really good one-day cricket lately so hopefully the boys have played enough cricket or had enough rest so that when we get to India we are ready to go,” the spinner concluded.
