Despite getting ruled out of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 due to injury, Bangladesh’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan, continues to face major flak for his controversial decision to call a ‘Time Out’ during a match against former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews.
Matthews found himself declared ‘timed out’ as he struggled to prepare to face the bowler. Shakib’s decision stirred up a lot of debate about Matthews’ dismissal, with some even questioning Shakib Al Hasan’s adherence to the ‘Spirit of the Game.’
In a recent development, Angelo Mathews’ older brother, Trevin, has strongly cautioned Shakib Al Hasan against coming to Sri Lanka to participate in either the Lanka Premier League (LPL) or international cricket. In a conversation with the Deccan Chronicle, Trevin Mathews expressed his belief that Shakib’s actions at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi were a blight on cricket.
While warning Bangladeshi skipper Shakib Al Hasan, Trevin said, “Shakib is not welcome in Sri Lanka. If he comes here to play any international or LPL matches, stones will be thrown at him, or he will have to face the annoyance of the fans.”

Shakib Al Hasan stood by his decision after having Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews timed out. He expressed that he believes his actions were fully by the rules, and he respects that individuals are entitled to their own interpretations of the incident.
Angelo Mathews’ elder brother Trevin also slammed Shakib’s sportsman spirit and added, “We are very disappointed. The Bangladeshi captain has no sportsman spirit and does not show humanity in the gentleman’s game.”
After the match, Angelo Mathews presented video proof and criticized Bangladesh’s captain Shakib, and the umpires for their questionable decision on the field. It’s worth noting that Revin Mathews has some experience playing club cricket in Sri Lanka.
Unfortunately, Shakib Al Hasan won’t be able to participate in the 2023 World Cup due to an injury to his left thumb. As a result, he will miss Bangladesh’s last match against Australia at the MCA Stadium in Pune on November 11. Bangladesh is no longer in contention for the semi-finals, but they are in a tough battle for Champions Trophy qualification, competing against defending champions England, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands.
