The legendary Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is all set to become the center of attention once more as it welcomes an exciting test match between the Australian women’s cricket team and the Indian women’s cricket team in December.
Scheduled for December 2023, the Test match is just one aspect of an entertaining all-format tour that will have both sides battling it out in numerous locations in the colorful city of Mumbai. Alongside the Test match, the Wankhede Stadium will also be the site for a spectacular three-match ODI series, giving fans plenty of cricketing excitement.
The impending one-off Test match is particularly important as it marks the much-awaited return of women’s Test cricket to Indian soil after nearly a decade. India’s last women’s Test match came in November 2014 against South Africa at Mysore. Meanwhile, for the Australian women’s squad, the Wankhede Stadium bears sentimental value as it’s where they last played a Test match in India, and that was back in 1984.
The success of this series has opened the way to more intriguing meetings in the women’s game. For those with a sharp recall, they’ll remember the enthralling encounter between India and Australia during their all-format tour in 2021.
India and Australia had a tour in 2021, where they played in all formats. The Women in Yellow came out as the winners with an 11-5 margin, but the one-off pink ball Test finished in a thrilling draw, leaving fans seeking more heart-pounding cricket excitement. It’s worth noting that the Wankhede Stadium is presently the proud host of the 2023 ODI World Cup, reinforcing its prominence as an iconic cricketing site. This respected field is set to host India’s league-stage encounter versus Sri Lanka and one of the two semi-finals, further adding to its illustrious cricketing past.
Apart from the Test match, there will be a series of three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) featuring the women’s cricket teams of India and Australia. This exciting cricket tour will be exclusively held in Mumbai, with the iconic Wankhede Stadium set to host the ODI series, and the thrilling T20Is anticipated to be played at Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium.
