The India Women’s National Cricket Team is gearing up to welcome South Africa for a series spanning June and July, featuring multiple formats of the game.
In June and July of 2024, the Indian women’s cricket team is set to host South Africa, led by Laura Wolvaardt, in a series featuring multiple formats.
The ODI matches will take place at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, while the one-off Test and three T20Is will be held at Chennai’s M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk.
The action-packed series will kick off with three ODIs starting on June 16th, followed by the second and third matches on June 19th and 23rd, all in Bengaluru. The eagerly awaited one-off Test is scheduled to begin on June 28th in Chennai.
After the Test, the focus will shift to the T20Is, set to commence on July 5th. The final two matches of the series will take place on July 7th and 9th, offering an exciting conclusion.
This series holds significant importance as it serves as preparation for the T20 World Cup 2024, ensuring both teams are in prime form for the prestigious tournament.
Originally planned for last year, the series was postponed due to logistical issues and the ICC World Cup 2023. However, it’s now back on track, aligning perfectly with the teams’ preparations for the upcoming World Cup.
For India, this series marks their third Test in just seven months, underlining the BCCI’s commitment to promoting Test cricket for women. In a progressive move, the BCCI recently announced equal match fees for both male and female cricketers under central contracts.
Moreover, the ODIs are significant as they contribute to the ICC Women’s Championship, offering direct qualification for the 2025 ODI World Cup. With South Africa currently placed second and India set to qualify directly, these matches carry added weight.
Beyond the cricketing aspect, this series presents an opportunity for the BCCI to expand the footprint of women’s cricket in India by exploring new venues. This strategic move aims to diversify the cricketing landscape beyond traditional strongholds like Mumbai.
Meanwhile, the ongoing T20I series against Bangladesh serves as excellent preparation for the Indian team, who have showcased exceptional skills and strategy, securing a commanding 3-0 lead with two matches remaining. Their focus now shifts to maintaining their momentum and securing a whitewash, further boosting confidence ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Bangladesh.
