In a groundbreaking moment in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Catherine Dalton has joined Multan Sultans as the fast-bowling coach. This historic move not only marks her as the first female coach in PSL history but also as the inaugural female fast-bowling coach for a high-profile men’s team.
Meet Catherine Dalton, a 30-year-old English native who became an Irish citizen in 2015. Pakistan holds a special place in her heart, having graced the country with her presence on two previous occasions. During her past trips, she collaborated closely with a myriad of fast bowlers, such as Mohammad Ilyas, Sameen Gul, and Arshad Iqbal. She also dedicated herself to nurturing the talents of numerous Under-19 players.
Catherine is no stranger to coaching, boasting an ECB-certified Level 3 Advanced Coach qualification. Her coaching journey is as rich as it is diverse, with previous roles at the national fast-bowling academy in the UK and the Ultimate Pace Foundation in India. Her experience extends to working alongside renowned players like Deepak Chahar. Notably, she served as the assistant head coach at the National Fast-Bowling Academy in the UK, sharing her expertise with cricket legends Ian Pont and Andre Nel.
“Having worked in Pakistan with some of the Multan Sultan players on two previous visits, I am really thrilled to be officially joining up with the franchise at the PSL,” Dalton told ESPNcricinfo while expressing her excitement about her new role.
Ali Tareen, who owns the PSL franchise Multan Sultans, expressed his thoughts on the significant signing of Catherine Dalton. Tareen emphasized that Dalton has played a vital role in the franchise’s player development program for the past five years. Having observed her closely, the owner has developed a strong sense of confidence in her abilities, especially in her hands-on approach to nurturing young players and facilitating their personal growth.
“Catherine has been part of our player-development programme for almost five years now. I have seen how she has improved players first-hand. I always knew she would become a fast-bowling coach at a high level. I am so glad that her first opportunity came at the Sultans,” Tareen concluded.
