The International Cricket Council has announced equal prize money for both men and women at all the ICC events. The announcement came after the ICC Annual Conference in Durban, South Africa, and ensured that the ICC Board fulfilled its commitment to reaching prize money equity ahead of its schedule in 2030.
“Teams will now receive equal prize money for the equivalent finishing position at comparable events as well as the same amount for winning a match at those events,” it further stated.
It’s a remarkable day for all cricket fans across the globe. As ICC equalled the prize money for men and women, this will set a benchmark for all the young upcoming female cricketers to participate and showcase their talent on the International level. With Women’s Cricket getting the recognition that it deserved it is also making a way for competition and allowing them to nurture more efficiently and join hands to compete against some great talents at the International level.
What ICC Chairman said
“This is a significant moment in the history of our sport and I am delighted that men’s and women’s cricketers competing at ICC global events will now be rewarded equally,” said ICC Chairman Greg Barclay.
“Since 2017 we have increased prize money at women’s events every year with a clear focus on reaching equal prize money and from here on in, winning the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup will carry the same prize money as winning the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and the same for T20 World Cups and U19s too.” Barclay added, “Cricket is genuinely a sport for all and this decision from the ICC Board reinforces that and enables us to celebrate and value every single player’s contribution to the game equally”, he further added.
The decision to level the prize money will not only create a huge impact on the young female cricketers but also allow them to compete freely without thinking about the differences between the cricket played by the male cricketers.
