Team India women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has expressed her keen desire to play more Test matches for India. She said that “We have to bring back Test matches in women’s cricket because it’s very important.”
Expressing her strong desire, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur has emphasized the importance of participating in more Test matches in the future. Despite her extensive career, the 34-year-old has engaged in just three red-ball matches for India. As a result, she advocates for an increase in the number of Test matches to aid players in mastering the nuances of the format and maintaining their fitness for potential opportunities.
Significantly, India’s schedule currently comprises just two Test matches in the 2023-24 cycle, with no fixtures planned for the following year. Hence, Harmanpreet underscores the necessity for the Indian women’s cricket team to engage in regular Test matches. She further highlights that the traditional red-ball game is a coveted experience for every member of her team.
“As a player, I definitely want more Tests because as a growing kid, we saw more Tests on TV than T20s. Nowadays it’s a lot of fun playing T20s but Test cricket is something every cricketer wants to play,” Harmanpreet said on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.
“This year we have two Tests – one against England and one against Australia – and I hope those games can make a huge impact on women’s cricket and hopefully in the future, we will keep getting more Test matches. We have to bring back Test matches in women’s cricket because it’s very important for women’s cricket,” she further added.
Harmanpreet Kaur says “Domestic Cricket has improved a lot”
The Indian captain also conveyed her satisfaction regarding the impressive performance of domestic cricket in recent times. Thanks to this progress, the BCCI successfully introduced the inaugural Women’s Premier League earlier this year, with expectations for its growth in the upcoming years. Harmanpreet also noted the substantial improvement in domestic cricket since her own playing days. She highlighted that players now have the privilege of participating in a plethora of matches, while viewers have the opportunity to catch the live action on television.
“Trust me, (domestic cricket) has improved a lot. Initially when I started playing, we hardly got domestic games but for the last couple of years, domestic level has improved a lot. We are getting more games and some domestic games are live also, people can watch on TV. It is improving day by day but in my early days we used to play two- and three-day games which we are really missing, and I’m sure after these two Test matches hopefully we’ll get two-day matches back. The more cricket we get, the more improvement we’ll see in women’s cricket,” Harman concluded.
