Royal Challengers Banglore (RCB) women’s team emerged victorious in the Women’s Premier League 2024 final by defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) women’s team.
RCB captained by Smriti Mandhana, the RCB women’s team fulfilled the dreams of their loyal supporters by clinching their first-ever trophy. While the men’s team had struggled to secure a title in 16 seasons, the RCB women’s side achieved the feat in just the second season of the WPL.
In the final showdown against Delhi Capitals, Richa Ghosh’s elegant boundary off Arundhati Reddy’s delivery in the 19.3rd over of RCB’s chase of 114 runs sealed both the match and the WPL title.
Despite a rocky start with the ball after being asked to field first, RCB managed to contain the Delhi Capitals after a solid partnership between Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning. Sophie Molineux turned the tide with a remarkable triple-wicket maiden over. Following her stellar performance, Shreyanka Patil’s four-wicket haul, supported by Asha Sobhana’s two crucial wickets, restricted Delhi Capitals to a modest total of 113 runs.
During the chase, RCB initially struggled for momentum, but Sophie Devine and Smriti Mandhana ensured stability in the early overs. Mandhana then partnered with Ellyse Perry to guide the team towards the target. Although Mandhana fell in the 15th over, Perry’s unbeaten 35, along with Rich Ghosh’s supporting innings, secured an emphatic 8-wicket victory for RCB.
The long-awaited triumph sparked jubilation among RCB fans, who had coined the phrase “Ee Sala Cup Namde”. Their celebrations were justified as the women’s team delivered the coveted title, marking a historic moment for the franchise. On social media, fans expressed their joy and admiration for RCB’s stellar performance throughout the tournament.
