The selection committee for the West Indies women’s cricket team has just unveiled the lineup of 15 players who will be representing the team during their upcoming tour to Australia in October. This exciting series will include a total of six matches, consisting of three T20Is and three ODIs.
After the West Indies Women’s impressive performance in both the CG United ODI Series and the T20I Series against Ireland Women in Saint Lucia this summer, the selection panel has decided to stick with the same squad for the upcoming tour of Australia. Captain Hayley Matthews will continue to lead the team, and this tour will mark the debut of their new Head Coach, Shane Deitz, who joined the West Indies setup at the end of August, as confirmed by CWI in their statement.
What’s particularly exciting about this squad is the inclusion of four young talents known as the ‘Rising Stars’: Ashmini Munisar, Djenaba Joseph, Zaida James, and Jannillea Glasgow. They’ll have their first opportunity to showcase their skills against the formidable Australian side, who are the reigning T20I and 50-over World Champions. This presents a fantastic chance for these budding players to prove themselves on the big stage.
Lead Selector for Women’s cricket Ann Browne-John said, “The selection panel has chosen to maintain most of the players who were victorious in the home series against Ireland. Jannillea Glasgow, after having an outstanding Rising Stars Women’s Under 19 tournament, has been included in the 15-member squad and we see the return of Karishma Ramharack.”
The West Indies’ journey in the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-2025 has seen them face off against New Zealand, England, and Ireland before their current series against Australia. With each game they play, they have the chance to accumulate valuable points and inch up the Championship table. Presently, they find themselves in the 9th position among the ten participating teams.
After their clashes with Australia, the West Indies Women’s team is slated to engage in four more three-match ODI series over the next couple of years. As this cycle concludes, the top five teams in the ICC Women’s Championship will secure a spot in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2025, along with the host nation, India.
