Despite a rough start to their Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) journey, the Mumbai Indians (MI) received a glimmer of hope with the announcement that their key batsman, Suryakumar Yadav, has been given the green light to join the ongoing season after recovering from injury.
The Mumbai Indians, five-time champions of the IPL, are facing a tough start to their season, with new captain Hardik Pandya struggling to find momentum. They’ve suffered defeats in their first three matches and find themselves at the bottom of the points table.
Their performances have been underwhelming in both bowling and batting departments. Despite a strong start in their first game against the Gujarat Titans, where they were 129 for 3 at one point, they couldn’t chase down 169 runs and ended up losing by six runs.
Things didn’t improve in their subsequent matches. Against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, they conceded a daunting 277/3 and lost by 31 runs. Then, facing the Rajasthan Royals, they could only muster 125/9 and lost by six wickets.
In dire need of a turnaround, the Mumbai Indians are hopeful for the return of their star batsman, Suryakumar Yadav. He’s been out of action since December due to ankle and hernia issues, undergoing two surgeries during his recovery period. After being deemed unfit by the NCA, the 33-year-old faced a setback, causing him to miss the initial games of the season. Nevertheless, he has now received the green light to join the five-time champions and is set to make his comeback in Mumbai’s upcoming match against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday, April 07, at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
“He is fit now. The NCA made him play a few practice games and he looked good. He can join the Mumbai Indians team. We wanted to be sure that when Surya goes back to MI, he is 100 percent fit and ready to play games. He wasn’t feeling 100% during his first fitness Test before the IPL, so we waited to see if there was any pain while he was batting,” a source in the BCCI confirmed to IndianExpress.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar shared a snapshot on his Instagram story, showcasing him in action during a practice session at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He’s a key figure in the Indian squad who is gearing up for the highly anticipated T20 World Cup 2024.
