Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have announced Pat Cummins as their new captain for the upcoming IPL 2024 season.
Pat Cummins has been announced as the new captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, replacing Aiden Markram. Markram led the team during IPL 2023, filling in for Kane Williamson. His stint as captain came after he led Sunrisers Eastern Cape to victory in the inaugural SA20 championship. However, Markram’s tenure in the IPL wasn’t as successful, with his team, SRH, finishing at the bottom of the points table.
Throughout the tournament, the Hyderabad-based team struggled, managing only four wins out of 14 league games. Markram’s performance with the bat was modest, scoring 248 runs in 13 games with an average of 22.55. Now, Pat Cummins is set to take over the reins as captain as SRH aims to secure its first IPL title since 2016.
IPL 2024 marks Cummins’ return to India since leading Australia to victory in the ODI World Cup the previous year. He has had a remarkable stint as Australia’s captain, securing victories in the World Test Championship and the World Cup, and drawing the Ashes in England. Cummins is set to embark on his maiden journey as an IPL captain. Alongside the change in captaincy, SRH has also appointed Daniel Vettori as its new head coach, replacing Brian Lara.
Cummins has been part of the IPL since 2014, playing for Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders in 42 games. He has contributed with both bat and ball, taking 45 wickets and scoring 379 runs.
With a new captain and coach at the helm, SRH is optimistic about turning its fortunes around after struggling to perform well in the last three IPL seasons. The team’s management is hopeful that the changes will bring about a positive transformation on the field.
The IPL 2024 is set to kick off on March 22, opening with an exciting clash between the current champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
