RCB is in search of a strong middle-order presence in the batting lineup, and that’s precisely what they expect from Cameron Green. According to Mo Bobat, the director of cricket at RCB, this is the key reason behind the franchise’s decision to acquire the Australian all-rounder from Mumbai Indians, making a substantial investment of INR 17.5 crore in the process.
The IPL 2024 retention deadline on Sunday sparked a buzz around Hardik Pandya’s potential move to Mumbai Indians from the Gujarat Titans. While that move did materialize, there was an unexpected twist with the news of Mumbai Indians trading Cameron Green to RCB.
Initially, it left everyone in shock, but soon the realization set in. To accommodate Hardik Pandya’s INR 15 crore contract in their budget and to have some financial flexibility in the upcoming auction, Mumbai Indians had to part ways with Cameron Green, whose price tag was INR 17.5 crore.
RCB made some strategic moves in the recent player releases, parting ways with individuals like Josh Hazlewood and Wanindu Hasaranga. The surprise addition of Green raised eyebrows among fans, especially considering the substantial cost involved. However, shedding light on the decision, RCB Director of Cricket Mo Bobat explained that Green’s skill set aligns perfectly with the team’s current needs.
In a conversation with RCB Bold Diaries, Mo emphasized that Green brings an ideal dynamic to the middle order. Given his proficiency as a power-hitter, he is expected to thrive in the batting lineup at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. He stated, “Cameron Green is the ideal fit for us in that middle-order power role. He is a high-quality, skillful and powerful batsman. I am sure he will enjoy batting at the Chinnaswamy. He is also a fantastic bowler and he bowls with pace and bounce, which were certainly attributes we were looking for, particularly in our home conditions. Let us not forget what an exceptional fielder he is.”
Green, a valuable member of Australia’s team, contributed to their recent triumph in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. While he didn’t feature in numerous matches, he remains a crucial part of Australia’s plans across various formats. During his inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) season with the Mumbai Indians (MI), Green showcased his prowess by participating in 16 games. He impressively accumulated 452 runs at an average and strike rate of 50.22 and 160.28, respectively. Notably, in a crucial must-win encounter, Cameron Green notched up a century, a performance that played a pivotal role in MI securing a spot in the playoffs.
