Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has expressed that Rishabh Pant is eligible to participate in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup as long as he is capable of fulfilling the wicketkeeping duties.
Rishabh Pant is gearing up for his much-anticipated return to cricket, scheduled just a week from now. The dynamic keeper-batsman is set to make a comeback in the Indian Premier League 2024, where he will take on the role of captain for the Delhi Capitals. This marks his first appearance on the field since December 2022.
Pant faced a tragic setback after the Test series against Bangladesh in December 2022, as he was involved in a car accident that resulted in a collision and subsequent fire. Swiftly taken to the hospital, he underwent knee surgery to address his injuries.
The entirety of 2023 saw Pant absent from the cricketing scene, but his dedication to regaining full fitness was unwavering. Surprisingly, his recovery surpassed expectations, and he now stands fully fit, prepared for a triumphant comeback.
Despite his return to keeping, reports suggest that Pant will primarily feature as a batter in the upcoming league. Delhi Capitals are taking a cautious approach, avoiding any undue haste in light of forthcoming international commitments. Even though Pant has resumed keeping, the team management has opted to have him focus on his batting role, a decision made with a mindful eye on his overall well-being. As he steps into the captain’s role, Pant is ready to lead the team from the front in this new phase of his cricketing journey.
Rishabh Pant’s full-season participation in the IPL 2024 could pave his way into contention for the T20 World Cup 2024. As a keeper-batter, he aims to leave his mark in the league, asserting his position both in his franchise and the national team.
Jay Shah emphasized the significance of Rishabh Pant’s potential presence in the T20 World Cup 2024, considering him a valuable asset for the Indian team.
“He (Rishabh Pant) is batting well, he is keeping well. We will declare him fit very soon. If he can play the T20 World Cup for us, that will be a big thing for us. He is a big asset for us. If he can keep, he can play the World Cup. Let’s see how he does in the IPL,” Shah was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
According to the latest updates from Sports Tak, Rishabh Pant, the captain of Delhi Capitals, has received the green light for fitness from the National Cricket Academy. It is anticipated that he will be joining the Delhi Capitals camp soon.
