Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian batsman, expresses the view that the Pakistan cricket team’s performance in ICC events has been hindered in recent years due to subpar fielding efforts.
Gautam Gambhir recently joined Yuvraj Singh on a chat show, where they discussed their association with Thums Up for brand promotion. The conversation naturally drifted towards the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024, slated for June in the West Indies and USA.
Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir gave interesting replies on being asked about India’s biggest threat in the upcoming T20 World Cup. “Afghanistan, in those conditions can be very very dangerous. Australia, because they have got impact players, and England because they play T20 cricket the way it should be played,” Gautam Gambhir said.
“I have a different angle. I think South Africa should win. They have not won a white-ball tournament. The way I saw their progress in the 50-over World Cup and obviously Pakistan who are very dangerous,” Yuvraj Singh said.
When sharing their thoughts on the potential contenders for the title, Gambhir took a moment to address Pakistan’s persistent fielding challenges.
“See Pakistan, their fielding is, I saw in the 50-over World Cup, probably the worst in international cricket. They will have to literally pull their socks up if they really want to compete in the T20 format,” Gautam Gambhir added.
“The number of finals that India have reached…I don’t think Pakistan have reached anywhere close to the number of finals that India has reached in the last five or six years. And you are just one step away from the trophy. Hopefully, the T20 World Cup could be one.”
Gautam Gambhir’s observation about Pakistan’s fielding being subpar is not unfounded, considering numerous instances where their below-average fielding has been a significant factor in their defeats. The team has often faced setbacks due to dropped catches, avoidable misfields, and a lackadaisical attitude on the field. Regardless of the team’s bowling or batting prowess, their struggles in the fielding department have been a consistent challenge, contributing to their losses.
