Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian cricketer, has expressed the opinion that Team India can secure series victories without relying on prominent players.
The ongoing Test series between the IND vs ENG has been a rollercoaster. The first setback with a surprising defeat against Rohit Sharma & Co. had cricket enthusiasts on edge. However, the Indian team bounced back impressively in the subsequent three matches, securing victories by 106 runs, 434 runs, and 5 wickets in Visakhapatnam, Rajkot, and Ranchi, respectively. This stellar performance led them to clinch the series 3-1, leaving just one match to be played.
What makes this triumph even more remarkable is the absence of key players like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Mohammed Shami. The final showdown in Dharamshala is eagerly anticipated, as India aims to further assert their dominance.
Drawing parallels to the historic Australia Test series win in 2020-21, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar highlighted the resilience of the Indian team. Much like the Australia series, where first-choice players were absent, the current England Tests have showcased the courage, stamina, grit, and determination of the newcomers. This victory is a testament to the depth and character of Indian cricket, overcoming challenges and emerging victorious.
“India missed a lot of big names in Australia but they still managed to pull off a fantastic win not just in Gabba but also in Melbourne. They came back after being bowled out for 36. Winning in Melbourne then they battled hard to save the Sydney Test match. If Rishabh Pant stayed on the crease for half an hour then India could have won that match as well.
“But the courage, stamina, grit and determination that the young Indian players showed during that Australia tour was visible even this time around against England,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.
Sunil Gavaskar humorously remarked on the absence of ‘big names’ in the England Test series, emphasizing that winning a series in cricket is a team effort, and it doesn’t hinge on individual star power. According to him, India’s success doesn’t rely on specific players as cricket is inherently a collective sport.
“That’s why I always say, you don’t need big names… If any big name thinks that India won’t win without him these two series have shown that whether you are there or not (it doesn’t matter). Cricket is a team sport. It doesn’t depend on one individual,” Gavaskar said.
