Delhi Capitals have brought on board dynamic Australian batter Jake Fraser-McGurk as a replacement for Lungi Ngidi for IPL 2024.
The upcoming IPL season will miss the fiery pace of South African bowler Ngidi, who’s unfortunately out due to an injury. Ngidi hasn’t seen competitive action since February.
His most recent outing was with the Paarl Royals in the SA20 league. Ngidi had been battling an ankle injury during South Africa’s home series against India from December to January. He had to sit out the T20Is against India but made a comeback during the Test matches.
With Ngidi unavailable, Delhi Capitals have turned to Australian batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk to fill the gap. Despite going unnoticed at the IPL auction, Fraser-McGurk caught everyone’s attention with his impressive performances in the Big Bash League and international cricket, as well as in ILT20.
Fraser-McGurk, a 21-year-old dynamic opener and leg-spinner from Melbourne, recently made his ODI debut against the West Indies in Sydney. He has represented Australia in two One-Day Internationals and has been signed by DC for his reserve price of 50 Lac rupees.
“Delhi Capitals (DC) named all-rounder Jake Fraser-McGurk as a replacement for Lungisani Ngidi for the upcoming edition of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
“Ngidi, who has played 14 IPL matches and has 25 wickets against his name, was ruled out of the TATA IPL 2024 due to injury. Jake Fraser-McGurk has played 2 ODIs for Australia. He joins DC for his reserve price of INR 50 Lac,” stated the media release from IPL.
Ngidi becomes the second player to leave the Delhi Capitals for IPL 2024. Just days ago, England’s Harry Brook also withdrew from the tournament citing personal reasons.
Last year, Jake Fraser-McGurk made waves by breaking AB de Villiers’ record for the fastest century in a List-A game. His blistering 29-ball hundred against Tasmania at Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide last October earned him significant attention. Fraser-McGurk’s innings saw him rack up 125 runs off just 38 balls, including ten fours and 13 sixes.
He continued his fine form in the Big Bash League, representing Melbourne Renegades and emerging as the team’s top scorer with 257 runs at a striking rate close to 160. His success continued to the ILT20, where he played for Dubai Capitals.
