In a groundbreaking development for the sport, cricket appears poised to make its debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as reported by several media outlets. Alongside four other sports, cricket is reportedly on the verge of receiving approval for inclusion in the 2028 LA Olympics.
Cricket has a long history, stated for creating remarkable moments in the world of sports. Yet, its customary five-day format precluded it from obtaining permanent status in the elite sporting event with official awards. However, with the introduction of the 20-over format, cricket has experienced a modern shift. This shortened version of the game opens the way for cricket’s eventual return to the Olympic stage, with the 2028 Games set for Los Angeles, USA.
The United States is gearing up to host the 2028 Olympics, with Los Angeles set to take center stage as the host city for this grand sporting spectacle. The eagerly awaited event is scheduled for the month of July. In just a day or two, the Los Angeles Olympics committee will be unveiling their carefully selected roster of sports that will feature in this monumental event.
Cricket made its Olympic debut way back in the 1900 Paris Olympics, where the Great Britain team clinched the Gold medal. The recent reintroduction of cricket to this global stage is undeniably a momentous occasion, given its immense popularity and viewership worldwide. It’s worth highlighting the substantial efforts put forth by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the governing body of cricket, to secure the game’s inclusion and gain approval from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
ICC’s Chairman Greg Barclay expressed his excitement, labelling it as a ‘significant landmark’ for the rich history of the game.
“We are delighted that LA28 have recommended cricket for inclusion in the Olympics. Whilst this is not the final decision, it is a very significant landmark towards seeing cricket at the Olympics for the first time in more than a century,” Barclay was saying as quoted as per ICC.
Lately, we’ve seen remarkable victories from both the men’s and women’s Indian cricket teams, securing gold in their respective events. This significant achievement at the Olympics promises to be a game-changer for the world of sports, potentially expanding the global appeal of cricket and creating exciting new opportunities in the market.
