In a thrilling contest of the fifth Ashes test, England did something remarkable and emerged victorious over the Aussies. England won the final Ashes Test by 49 runs and draws the Ashes series 2-2.
Australia experienced a bittersweet moment at The Oval as they came tantalizingly close to winning their first series on English soil in 22 years. However, despite being in a commanding position for most of the fourth innings, the Pat Cummins-led side suffered a 49-run defeat, thanks to a remarkable comeback by England’s Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali.
On Day 4, the Aussie openers set the stage for a thrilling chase of 384 runs, but on Day 5, their fortunes took a downturn as Chris Woakes and Mark Wood dismissed them early. Marnus Labuschagne also couldn’t find his form, putting immense pressure on Steven Smith and Travis Head. Nevertheless, both Smith and Head displayed excellent batting and put together a 95-run partnership, giving Australia hope.
During the lunch break, Australia seemed well-poised with wickets in hand and momentum on their side. However, Moeen Ali’s exceptional bowling after the break changed the game’s complexion entirely. He picked up crucial wickets of Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and Pat Cummins, proving his worth despite facing criticism earlier in the Ashes 2023. Captain Ben Stokes’ trust in Ali paid off handsomely as England found a way back into the contest.
Later in the match, Alex Carey and Todd Murphy fought hard and built a significant partnership, raising the tension for English fans. But, in his farewell game, veteran pacer Stuart Broad delivered a crucial breakthrough. Broad ingeniously changed the bails before dismissing Murphy on the very next delivery, much to the delight of commentator Nasser Hussain and the home crowd.
In a touching moment, Stuart Broad secured the final wicket, marking the end of his illustrious career. While the series ended in a draw, Australia retained the Ashes, and England can take pride in their incredible effort over the last three Tests.
