Sri Lanka’s lineup for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 is brimming with seasoned players and promising talent, as announced recently.
With teams putting the finishing touches on their squads by May 25th, Sri Lanka seems ready to make a mark in the T20 World Cup. They’ve got a mix of seasoned veterans, promising talent, and tactical smarts that could make them a real contender.
Last December saw Wanindu Hasaranga taking the reins as T20I captain, leading the charge for Sri Lanka. His deputy, Charith Asalanka, joins him, promising a strong partnership in the middle order.
Angelo Mathews, a seasoned campaigner, makes a return to the T20 World Cup after a hiatus of nearly three years. With five previous appearances, Mathews brings a wealth of experience, having been part of Sri Lanka’s victorious campaign in 2014.
The Sri Lankan squad presents a blend of youth and experience. Players like Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, and Sadeera Samarawickrama infuse vigor into the team, while Dasun Shanaka, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Kusal Mendis provide leadership, bolstering the team’s resolve.
Despite a recent hamstring niggle, pacer Matheesha Pathirana finds his place in the squad, demonstrating his potential. Pathirana’s IPL journey with Chennai Super Kings was cut short due to the injury, but his return to the national setup indicates his road to recovery.
Another left-arm pacer, Dilshan Madhushanka, joins the squad after returning from a hamstring injury that sidelined him from the IPL. Together with Nuwan Thushara, they add excitement to the pace attack, complementing spearheads Dushmantha Chameera and Dilshan Madushanka.
Group D poses formidable challenges for Sri Lanka, with South Africa, Bangladesh, Netherlands, and Nepal in the mix. Their campaign commences on 3 June against South Africa in New York.
