Australia has named Mitchell Marsh as their T20I skipper for the upcoming tour of South Africa, ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, which is less than a year away. During the three-match T20I series, some exciting new faces are in line for an international debut, including Spenser Johnson from South Australia, Aaron Hardie from Western Australia, and Matthew Short from Adelaide Strikers.
Star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will be the 12th Men’s player to lead Australia in T20 cricket, and he aims to impress the selectors with his captaincy skills. Having showcased good form during the Ashes, scoring 250 runs in three matches at an average of 50, Marsh is eager to continue his strong performance against Aiden Markram and the South African team. His spectacular century in the third Test at Leeds boosts his confidence heading into the T20I series.
Interestingly, Aaron Hardie has also been named in Australia’s preliminary squad for the ODI World Cup in October-November. After a thrilling 2-2 Ashes series, Australia now shifts their focus to the shortest format of the game for the three-match T20I series against South Africa. All the matches are scheduled to take place in Durban, with the first T20I set for August 30.
Spencer Johnson, a tall left-arm pacer, showed great promise during the inaugural season of Major League Cricket, despite a tough campaign for the Los Angeles Knight Riders. He bowls at decent speeds and possesses the ability to swing the ball effectively.
Aaron Hardie, a right-arm medium pacer, has impressed with notable performances against big names like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Joe Root in tour matches. Additionally, he can contribute with the bat when needed. His consistent displays for Australia A have earned him a spot in the squad.
Matthew Short, a well-known figure in franchise leagues worldwide, has been named for his batting prowess. Having played for Punjab Kings in the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League, the right-handed batter has the chance to showcase his skills and potentially earn a spot in Australia’s top order for the T20 World Cup in 2024.
