Australia has announced their squad for the T20I series for the South Africa tour and Mitchell Marsh has been handed over the leadership role. But the former Australian batsman and captain was not happy with the selection of Steve Smith in the T20I series.
Recently, Michael Clarke was remarkably candid in his assessment, openly criticizing the Australian selectors for what he described as a ‘disconcerting’ decision. The bone of contention rested on the appointment of Steve Smith as the opener for the upcoming T20 matches against South Africa.
This past Monday, Selection Chair George Bailey dropped a significant revelation. While unveiling a 14-member squad for the imminent three-match series, Bailey disclosed Smith’s new batting position. Given Aaron Finch’s retirement in the previous year and Smith’s exceptional performance, while opening for Sydney Sixers in the BBL, Bailey provided a rationale for his decision. He remarked, “Smith’s form was simply too impressive to overlook.”
Importantly, this series serves as Steve Smith’s inaugural appearance as an opener in T20 matches for Australia. Expounding on his decision, George Bailey underscored the excitement generated by Smith’s outstanding performances in the Big Bash League. This dynamic showcase highlighted the depth of Smith’s skill set. Bailey further expressed that witnessing this brilliance on the international stage was a strong desire.
Smith’s palpable enthusiasm for this new role was evident. He conveyed his eagerness to contribute to the T20 matches. Bailey hinted that this enthusiasm might lead to Smith taking a break during certain one-day matches against South Africa. He conveyed his anticipation by stating, “We are enthusiastic about seeing his effective approach as a Big Bash opener translate to the international arena.”
However, the decision has not been universally embraced, particularly by Michael Clarke. Smith’s limited participation in the previous year’s T20 World Cup remains a point of contention. Having been selected for just a single match, Australia fell short of reaching the semi-finals. Clarke’s incredulity was clear. Speaking on Sky Sports Radio, he expressed his astonishment, saying, “This selection is quite perplexing. Smith was included in the World Cup squad and yet couldn’t secure a consistent spot in the XI.”
Clarke stated that “Our World Cup performance was baffling. I couldn’t fathom Smith’s exclusion,” he lamented. He continued, “There seems to be no accountability. It’s as if issues just vanish.”
Clarke continued. “I feel like I’m watching a different game. Smith’s T20 strategy perplexes me,” he stated. Adding more fuel, he noted, “Smith isn’t playing other T20s globally. He even missed an IPL spot. However, his passion is evident.”
