Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell won’t be able to participate in the forthcoming T20I series against South Africa due to an ankle injury. The seasoned player harmed himself while preparing during Australia’s initial training session in Durban.
Australia is currently on their journey to South Africa, where they are gearing up for a white-ball series of three T20Is, closely followed by a five-game ODI clash against the Proteas. The action is all set to start off in Durban on Wednesday, August 30th. Unfortunately, there’s a blow for the visiting squad, as one of their best performers in limited-overs cricket, Glenn Maxwell, won’t be able to take the field for the T20I series owing to an ankle injury. The blow happened during Australia’s initial practice session in Durban.
To replace the void left by Maxwell, the Australian squad has brought in Matthew Wade, the aggressive wicketkeeper-batsman, to join the ranks. Tony Dodemaide, the selector for the Australian squad, indicated that Maxwell’s absence is a deliberate choice keeping in mind the next three-game ODI series against India, followed by the showpiece 50-over World Cup.
“We are taking a precautionary approach, given Glenn was heading home next week in any case. We will monitor Glenn’s recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India in advance of the World Cup,” Dodemaide was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
In an unforeseen change of events, the batter found himself recovering a fractured leg in a somewhat strange occurrence back in November 2022. His misfortune occurred when his friend accidentally landed on his left leg, resulting in a shattered fibula. A surgical procedure proved necessary, resulting in the placement of a metal plate in his left leg. Unfortunately, fate handed another blow as Maxwell just suffered an injury to the same leg—this time to his ankle.
However, there’s a silver lining to this predicament. Dodemaide, the authority on the case, has made the decision to pull Maxwell from the forthcoming T20I against South Africa. This change is geared around promoting safety, which definitely comes as a calming sigh of relief for cricket aficionados.
All the matches are scheduled to take place in Durban, with the first T20I set for August 30.
