Australia is gearing up for a prolonged stay in India following the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, with preparations in full force for a 5-match T20I series against India. The action is expected to get off on November 23rd in Visakhapatnam.
Australia has wasted no time in planning for the upcoming 5-match T20I series against India, which is set to follow the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. In preparation for the busy home summer in December and January, Cricket Australia has unveiled a 15-player squad for the T20I series. Notably, some key players are being rested.
In an interesting move, Mathew Wade will lead the 15-member squad as the T20I captain for the third time. While Australia is giving several pivotal members of their fast-bowling arsenal and middle-order batting some well-deserved rest, the likes of David Warner, Travis Head, Steve Smith, and the versatile Glenn Maxwell will remain in India for the upcoming T20I series.
Australian pacer trio Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins are ready to take a well-deserved rest and fly back to Australia following the World Cup to prepare for the forthcoming summer season. As Pakistan gears up for a 3-match test series against Australia commencing on December 14th, the Aussies will be without the services of these renowned fast bowlers. Additionally, the all-rounders Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green will also be going home. It’s worth mentioning that Mitchell Marsh previously captained the Australian squad during the T20I series while Pat Cummins was away.

Australia is placing its trust in left-arm pace bowler Spencer Johnson, who will be splitting the new ball responsibilities with Jason Behrendorff, Sean Abbott, and Nathan Ellis. The team’s spin department will be managed by Indian-origin leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha, who will join forces with Adam Zampa. In the midst of these changes, Glenn Maxwell’s role as an all-rounder and spin bowler will be essential in the starting XI.
Unfortunately, Ashton Agar remains sidelined from the T20I series due to a recurring calf injury. It’s a setback, as he had missed the ICC Cricket World Cup in India for the same reason. However, Australia views this situation as a chance to assemble a well-rounded squad in preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024, to be held in the West Indies and the USA.
Australia squad for India T20Is:
Matthew Wade (C), Jason Behrendorff, Sean Abbott, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa.
