Australia is gearing up for their first home test of the new season in a three-match series against Pakistan, a crucial part of the ongoing WTC 2023–25 cycle. After clinching the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, led by Pat Cummins, the team is riding high on success and is eager to carry the momentum forward.
Scheduled to kick off on December 14 in Perth, the first test is eagerly anticipated. Pakistan has already arrived, preparing for the series with a four-day practice match against the Prime Minister’s XI. Cricket Australia (CA) announced on Sunday, unveiling the host team’s lineup for the opening test in Perth. The squad features a formidable, full-strength lineup ready to take on the challenge posed by Pakistan.
Shan Masood will be at the helm for Pakistan, having taken over the test captaincy following Babar Azam’s resignation across formats. Masood, a southpaw with 30 test matches under his belt, boasts 1597 runs at an average of 28.5, including four centuries in the longest format. On the other side, Australia has bolstered their squad with the inclusion of seasoned opener David Warner, and off-spinner Nathan Lyon makes a comeback after recovering from an injury.
The responsibility of leading the squad falls on Pat Cummins, and the upcoming test will mark Lance Morris’ debut in the test arena. The formidable pace trio of Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc, along with the addition of Scott Boland, will pose a formidable challenge to the Pakistani batsmen. Cricket Australia has unveiled a 14-man squad for the first test.
