Australia has announced a 13-player squad for the upcoming second Test against Pakistan, set to kick off on December 26 at the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Pat Cummins’ side has opted to leave out reserve fast bowler Lance Morris from the original roster. The intention is to stay with the same playing eleven in the forthcoming Boxing Day Test.
The home team seized a 1-0 advantage by dominating the away side, securing a massive 360-run victory in the inaugural Test at Perth’s Optus Stadium. Star batsman David Warner marked his 26th century, likely in his farewell Test series, and veteran spinner Nathan Lyon achieved a milestone by reaching his 500th wicket in Test cricket. On the other hand, Pakistan’s newcomer, Aamer Jamal, impressed with outstanding bowling, securing seven wickets in the opening Test.
George Bailey, Australia’s head selector, explained that Morris has been let go from the squad so he can join the Melbourne Stars in the current Big Bash League (BBL).
“Lance has been released for the Melbourne match but will stay prepared for Test cricket as he remains firmly in our plans for the summer, should an opportunity arise. Otherwise, the squad remains unchanged following the strong performance in Perth,” Bailey said.
The squad is likely to stick with the winning combination for the next match. Although all-rounder Cameron Green has secured his spot in the squad, it seems improbable that he will make it to the final playing XI. The only other pace bowling option available in the squad is Scott Boland.
Marnus Labuschagne, the key batsman, escaped any major damage after sustaining a finger injury in the first Test against Pakistan. As a result, he’s set to stay in the lineup and resume his usual spot at No. 3 in the batting order.
Australia skipper Pat Cummins hinted at a similar playing XI for the Boxing Day Test, stating that if injuries won’t be a concern, the team is likely to remain unchanged.
“I don’t think injuries are going to be an issue, so I dare say it will be a pretty similar line-up at this stage. I think all the bowlers are pretty fresh after (the win in Perth). It’s basically the ideal start to the summer,” said Cummins.
Mitchell Marsh showcased his versatility by delivering an outstanding performance with both the bat and ball. He notched up impressive scores of 90 runs and an unbeaten 63 runs. In addition to his batting prowess, the fast bowler made a significant impact by dismissing former Pakistan skipper Babar Azam in the first innings. Recognizing his exceptional all-around contribution, he was rightfully awarded the Player of the Match.
