Originally from Baracara village in Guyana, Joseph, who represents Guyana in domestic cricket, had an unconventional journey. Despite featuring in only five first-class matches, he made a significant impact, playing for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL and Dubai Capitals in ILT20.
Joseph’s cricketing journey began after a career shift from logging to working as a security guard in New Amsterdam. His neighbor, Romario Shepherd, played a pivotal role in facilitating his entry into the Guyana cricket team.
Facing financial challenges in 2021, Joseph ingeniously used melted bottles and fruits as makeshift cricket balls. Despite these hurdles, he showcased his skills for Tucber Park Cricket Club, catching the eye of Romario Shepherd.
Making his debut for Guyana in the West Indies Championship in 2023, Joseph ventured into List-A cricket the following year in the Super50 Cup against Barbados. Subsequently, he joined the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL.
In December 2023, Joseph received his maiden Test call-up for the series against Australia, where he played a crucial role in the historic win despite a toe injury sustained from Mitchell Starc’s yorker. With West Indies being bowled out for 193, the team needed a hero.
The impact was severe enough for Shamar to be retired hurt, and he struggled to make his way back to the dressing room. Despite this setback, his resilience shone through as he not only recovered but also went on to dismantle the Australian batting order. In an impressive display, Joseph took seven wickets in the second innings, dismissing key players like Usman Khawaja, Travis Head, and Marnus Labuschagne at a low cost.
This victory marked the fourth time that the West Indies emerged triumphant against Australia at The Gabba. Once again, Shamar Joseph has reignited the passion and emotion for West Indies cricketers to represent their side.
