Ruturaj Gaikwad, the opening batsman for India, has been in stellar form during the ongoing five-match series against Australia. His standout performance includes a brilliant century in Guwahati and pivotal contributions in the 2nd and 4th T20Is alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. Despite the return of Shreyas Iyer, Gaikwad has been retained as the vice-captain, highlighting his growing importance to the team.
Considered a potential leader in the T20 format, the Maharashtra right-hander attributes his success to the guidance of MS Dhoni, his captain at the IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Gaikwad is even seen as a potential successor to Dhoni in CSK, as the veteran cricketer is likely in the twilight of his IPL career. Gaikwad acknowledges that the lessons learned from Dhoni have played a significant role in his growth as a cricketer.
Ruturaj Gaikwad mentioned that having MS Dhoni around has significantly enhanced his understanding of the game. He said, “The learning from CSK & Mahi Bhai has helped, especially play with the situation and look to take the game. I am trying to continue what I have learned from them.”
Gaikwad attracted everyone’s attention with his great performance for CSK in the league, earning him a permanent berth in the playing XI. He’s emerged as one of the most improved batsmen in Indian cricket, altering his batting style to become more dominating against pace bowlers. Notably, his acceleration after a decent start has shown substantial development, as seen in his remarkable 52-run contribution in the final 3 overs at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The highlight of his recent performances was an undefeated 123-run knock in the 3rd T20I, marking his maiden international century for India.
