In a thrilling One-Day Cup match, Prithvi Shaw played a key role in the Northamptonshire Steelbacks’ dramatic six-wicket success over Durham. Coming off his incredible 244-run innings, Shaw took his blazing form into this match, notching an unbroken 125 runs, and led his team to victory with a significant 24.2 overs to spare.
Shaw’s onslaught on Durham’s bowlers was a spectacle to witness. With an incredible 15 fours and seven sixes in just 76 deliveries, he demonstrated his remarkable batting power. Notably, he achieved a rare achievement by completing his 10th List A century, reaching a superb century in just 68 balls.
Adding to Northamptonshire’s dominance was Luke Procter’s excellent exhibition of bowling skills. Procter’s excellent period earned him a career-best List A figure of 4/34, making a huge impact by demolishing Durham’s middle order. Despite Liam Trevaskis’ brave effort, providing 37 runs, Durham’s final score never looked to be enough as they couldn’t bat out their allowed fifty overs.
The match’s narrative was defined from the off as Northamptonshire’s bowlers thwarted Durham’s opening batsmen’s aggressive intentions. The initial powerplay yielded a paltry 36 runs, showing both the pitch’s sluggishness and Northamptonshire’s conservative bowling strategy.
Although David Bedingham and Michael Jones sought to create a recovery, it was Procter’s talent that proved essential in upsetting Durham’s batting lineup. James Sales chipped in by removing Durham’s skipper, while spin spinners Simon Kerrigan and Rob Keogh managed to overcome the middle-order obstacles.
Shaw’s answer during Northamptonshire’s chase was explosive, as he unleashed a flurry of boundaries and carefully placed risks. After an initial wasted opportunity on 21, he capitalized on a second chance and rapidly drove his team to a half-century within the eighth over. Even though George Drissell of Durham managed to hit back with two fast wickets, Shaw exhibited his resilience by answering with successive sixes to achieve his fifty.
Teaming up with Keogh, Shaw heightened the pressure, repeatedly sending Durham’s bowlers around the field. His aggressive batting showing, especially against Scott Borthwick, underlined his superiority. As Shaw and Keogh hit the century partnership mark.
Shaw’s blistering assault left Durham with no room for recovery. His torrent of boundaries against Drissell sealed the deal, as Northamptonshire completed an extraordinary triumph with an incredible 24.2 overs to spare.
