There has been considerable brainstorming about who will be the next Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Harbhajan Singh has expressed his interest in taking on the role.
As Rahul Dravid’s tenure with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) nears its end following the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the organization is on the lookout for a new head coach for the Men in Blue. Dravid has decided not to reapply, prompting the BCCI to start the selection process from scratch.
Among the names being considered for this prestigious role, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has shown a keen interest in coaching Team India. Another notable name in the mix is former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir. Although Gambhir doesn’t fully meet all the required criteria for the position, his successful stint mentoring the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 has brought him into the conversation. Harbhajan, meanwhile, emphasized that the role of head coach is more about managing players than teaching technical aspects of the game.
“I do not know if I would apply. Coaching India is about man management, not about teaching players how to drive and pull. They know it very well. You can give some guidance to them. Cricket has given me so much and If I get a chance to give it back, I would be more than happy,” Harbhajan was quoted as saying by Times Of India (TOI).
Rumors are circulating about Chennai Super Kings’ coach Stephen Fleming and former Australian head coach Justin Langer. Langer has been particularly vocal about his interest in working with the Indian team, acknowledging the immense pressure that comes with the role in a cricket-obsessed nation like India.
Additionally, the BCCI is considering leveraging MS Dhoni’s influence to persuade Fleming. On another note, Harbhajan Singh, commonly known as Bhaji, hasn’t officially applied for the position yet but has expressed his willingness to coach the national team.
