Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, has shared his intentions to keep playing cricket for the next 2-3 years. He openly acknowledges that his main focus remains on leading his team to victory in the World Cup.
After the heartbreak of losing the 2023 World Cup final to Australia, Rohit Sharma, like many across the nation, felt shattered. It was a tough blow, especially for Rohit, who had high hopes of lifting the prestigious ICC trophy. Having been part of India’s victorious 2007 T20 World Cup squad, Rohit always held a special place for the 50-over format. That’s why seeing him struggle to hold back tears was truly heart-wrenching.
At 36, there were whispers that this might have been Rohit’s last chance at the ODI World Cup. But he’s not ready to close that chapter just yet. Despite nearing 40 by the time the 2027 World Cup rolls around in South Africa, Rohit isn’t ruling out the possibility of competing. Retirement isn’t on his mind; instead, he’s focused on representing India in the next World Cup and the upcoming World Test Championship final.
During a recent chat with Gaurav Kapur on the popular “Breakfast with Champions” podcast, Rohit Sharma shared that he’s feeling positive about continuing to play competitive cricket for a few more years.
“I haven’t really thought about retirement. But I don’t know where life takes you. I am still playing well at this point in time – so I am thinking I am going to continue for a few more years and then, I don’t know. I really want to win the World Cup and there is a WTC final in 2025, hopefully India makes it,” Rohit said.
Since Rohit Sharma took over as India’s full-time captain, he’s had his fair share of near misses on the big stage. In 2023, India stumbled at the final hurdle not once, but twice, losing the WTC final to Australia in June and falling to them again a few months later. Now, with his sights set on the T20 World Cup, Rohit is gearing up in the IPL with the Mumbai Indians.
In this season’s IPL, Rohit, along with his opening partner Ishan Kishan, has been instrumental in giving Mumbai Indians some strong starts. Interestingly, this is the first time since their 2013 title-winning campaign that Rohit isn’t leading the team.
Despite controversial circumstances that saw him replaced by Hardik as captain, Rohit is determined to make IPL 2024 count. Mumbai Indians have already notched victories against two struggling teams this season, RCB and Delhi Capitals.
With the T20 World Cup just around the corner, starting only six days after the IPL final, Rohit knows the importance of finding his form and delivering big performances. It’s all about building momentum and confidence ahead of the World Cup campaign.
