Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), shared some significant updates, including the participation of star all-rounder Hardik Pandya in domestic white-ball tournaments.
Ahead of the T20 World Cup, there’s been a significant revelation from the BCCI secretary regarding Hardik Pandya’s involvement in white-ball domestic tournaments. According to reports from Cricbuzz, Pandya, despite recent fitness concerns, has agreed to participate in these tournaments after being elevated to a Grade A central contract earlier this year.
This announcement comes amidst discussions surrounding the BCCI’s annual central contracts for the 2024-25 season. While Pandya’s promotion to Grade A was confirmed, players like Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were not included, potentially due to their preference for IPL over domestic cricket when not representing the national team.
The BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, revealed that after detailed discussions with Pandya, the decision was made to include him in the central contract list, as Pandya expressed his commitment to playing in white-ball domestic tournaments such as the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
It’s worth noting that shortly after the central contract announcement, Pandya showcased his readiness for the IPL 2024 season by participating in the DY Patil local T20 tournament.
Following his inclusion in the central contract list, Pandya was also named vice-captain in India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
In addition to these updates, Shah mentioned that the structure of domestic cricket will be finalized soon, and the BCCI’s High-Performance Centre at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru will start operating from August this year.
Shah also revealed that IPL franchises are yet to be informed about the retention rules and policies for the next cycle, leaving both teams and fans eagerly awaiting news on potential player retention strategies.
“Impact player was a test case. Two new Indian players are getting a chance in the IPL, We will discuss with the stakeholders – franchises, and broadcasters – before deciding on the continuation of the Impact Player. It’s not permanent, but no one has provided feedback against the rule,” he said as quoted by Cricbuzz.
