The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken firm action on fast bowler Haris Rauf for not joining the Pakistan Test squad in the 2023-24 series against Australia.
The PCB has taken a definitive stance on Haris Rauf’s refusal to join Pakistan’s Test squad for the Australia tour in 2023-24. Following a thorough probe conducted by a board committee, the decision was made to terminate Haris’ central contract from December 1, 2023. Moreover, no ‘No Objection Certificate’ (NOC) will be granted for his participation in any foreign league until June 30, 2024.
Haris was given an opportunity on January 30, 2024, to present his side of the story in adherence to the principles of natural justice. Unfortunately, his response was deemed unsatisfactory. The board found his conduct as an international cricketer to be lacking, particularly in light of his refusal to represent the national team in Test cricket, which was viewed as a significant mistake.
Haris Rauf’s decision to prioritize playing in the Big Bash League (BBL) over the Test series against Australia was met with disapproval, especially from the newly appointed chief selector, Wahab Riaz. Wahab, who succeeded former Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq in the role, expressed disappointment, emphasizing the team’s anticipation of utilizing Haris’ pace on the fast Australian pitches.
The PCB stressed in its press release that being a part of the Pakistani team is a tremendous honor and privilege for any athlete. Rauf’s decision to decline inclusion in the Test squad without furnishing a valid medical report or offering a justified reason was considered a significant violation of his contractual commitments.
“We spoke to the captain and coach, and they wanted to utilize Haris Rauf as an impact player in Test cricket. We weren’t demanding more than 10-12 overs a day from him, which he has done in ODIs,” Riaz was quoted as saying in a press conference.
Haris put his central contract at risk when he chose not to be available for the Australia Test series. According to some internal source reports, certain senior officials within the Pakistan Cricket Board expressed displeasure with Haris’ attitude. They were also unhappy about the statements made by Aqib Javed, the coach of Lahore Qalandars, who stood by the fast bowler.
Haris Rauf has participated in 37 ODIs, 66 T20Is, and a single Test match for Pakistan, where he has taken a total of 160 wickets.
