Chennai Super Kings (CSK) dropped a major update about Matheesha Pathirana’s injury just before their clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
Chennai Super Kings have confirmed that Matheesha Pathirana will be heading back to his home country to continue his recovery from injury. Pathirana, who last appeared for the Chennai Super Kings in their match against SunRisers Hyderabad on April 28, has been sidelined due to a nagging injury. He missed out on the game against the Punjab Kings and was also not included in the playing XI for their away fixture against the same team in Dharamsala.
In an official statement released on Sunday, the Chennai Super Kings announced Pathirana’s return to Sri Lanka. The statement cited a hamstring injury as the reason for his departure, stating that he would undergo further rehabilitation back home.
“Chennai Super Kings pacer Matheesha Pathirana is nursing a hamstring injury and will be returning to Sri Lanka for further recovery. Chennai Super Kings wishes Pathirana a quick recovery,” the statement read.
Throughout the tournament, the Sri Lankan bowler has been a standout performer for CSK, taking 13 wickets in six games with an economy rate of 7.68.
He’s the second-highest wicket-taker for CSK behind Mustafizur Rahman, who has 14 wickets. However, Rahman is currently unavailable as his NOC for the tournament expired on May 1, and he returned to Bangladesh before the World Cup.
Ravindra Jadeja played a crucial role in CSK’s 28-run victory over Punjab Kings in the IPL 2024 clash at the Dharamsala. His impressive all-round performance with both bat and ball was instrumental in securing the win for Chennai.
CSK started their innings after being put into bat first, with Ajinkya Rahane’s early dismissal compensated by Ruturaj Gaikwad’s aggressive batting. Gaikwad, along with Daryl Mitchell, built a solid partnership, but the middle order stumbled briefly with Shivam Dube’s early departure. However, Jadeja’s quickfire 43 provided momentum. Despite contributions from Shardul Thakur and Mitchell Santner, CSK finished their innings at 167/9.
In response, PBKS lost early wickets but Prabhsimran Singh’s attacking innings kept their chase alive briefly. However, regular dismissals, including skipper Sam Curran’s, halted their progress. Despite late resistance from Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar, PBKS fell short, ending with 139/9 in 20 overs, handing CSK the victory.
