Chennai Super Kings are facing a major setback amid the 2024 season as their star opener, Devon Conway from New Zealand, has been sidelined for the entire IPL campaign.
Conway sustained a thumb injury during New Zealand’s T20I series against Australia just before the Premier League commenced. Rather than opting for a similar replacement, CSK has chosen England pacer Richard Gleeson to fill in for the explosive batter.
This news was confirmed earlier today on IPLT20.com, the tournament’s official website. Gleeson will soon join the CSK squad and has been acquired by Ruturaj Gaikwad’s team for his reserve price of INR 50 Lakhs.
Devon Conway, the New Zealand opener, has been a vital player for the Chennai-based franchise in the last two IPL seasons. His impressive performances, tallying 924 runs in 23 matches with nine half-centuries and a highest score of 92*, greatly contributed to the team’s success. Leading them to clinch the trophy in the 2023 season. However, a disappointing injury has now sidelined Conway for the entirety of the 2024 tournament.
“Devon Conway ruled out TATA IPL 2024 due to an injury, Chennai Super Kings add Richard Gleeson to the squad. Devon Conway has been ruled out of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 due to an injury.” – the official statement on IPLT20.com read.
Adding Gleeson to the squad is anticipated to bolster CSK’s bowling lineup, which has already displayed promising performances in the early stages of the tournament. Despite the setback of losing a key player like Conway, the team has managed to sustain its momentum. Currently positioned third on the points table with eight points from six matches, CSK is holding strong.
Gleeson brings a wealth of experience from various franchise leagues worldwide. He has previously showcased his skills with teams such as Delhi Bulls (Abu Dhabi T10), Durban’s Super Giants (SAT20), Manchester Originals (Hundred), Rangpur Riders (BPL), Peshawar Zalmi (PSL), Melbourne Renegades (Big Bash), and the Gulf Giants (ILT20).
